The driveway gets a full coat of sealer, rolled on so the surface is black, even and protected from the sun and water that grey and crack bare asphalt.
Crack filling
Open cracks get filled before the sealer goes down. Sealing over an open crack just hides it for a season — filling it first is part of the job, not an upsell.

Before and after

These are two different driveways, not the same one. The first is a cracked surface before any work; the second is a freshly sealed driveway where the cracks were filled first, then sealed over.

When sealing isn't the answer

If the asphalt is past saving

Sealing is maintenance, not a repair. If the driveway is badly broken up, alligator-cracked, or sunken, a coat of sealer won't hold it together — it'll just make the cracks black for a season.
